Director Applications
MSA Updates
Written by Muhammad Sultan
Saturday, 05 May 2007
Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wabarakatuh,

We, the McMaster MSA executive have decided to open applications for director positions for all MSA members. This decision was made to ensure that there will be a greater diversity of applicants, to rectify any miscommunications and errors regarding the acceptance and declination of nominations and to encourage greater active participation from the general members.

All previous nominations and acceptances are nullified and all interested parties may apply individually.

The director positions are a great way to be involved in planning and organizing the many services that the MSA has to offer. The positions also include certain responsibilities that require positive enthusiasm and a desire to serve the McMaster community.

In addition to the current director positions, there will be one additional director this year. Namely, The director of Technology Services

We encourage everyone who is interested in a directorship position to review the director ‘roles and responsibilities’ document and thoroughly complete the application. Both documents are attached with this e-mail.

To Apply:

· Complete the application and save the file as: DirectorPosition-Name
ex: SistersSocial-QudsiyyaZalgaonker
· email the application to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
· Deadline: 11:59pm Friday May 11th

Note: application for more than one director position is accepted and encouraged.

Islamophobia at McMaster
MSA Updates
Written by MSA
Friday, 13 April 2007
Asalamualaikum,

The McMaster Muslims Students' Association (MSA) is horrified at this incidence of hate crime and Islamophobia here at McMaster University. For such acts of ignorance to take place in an environment of academia and learning, and directed against a professor who advocates human liberties and social justice, is as unacceptable as its indications are frightening. The Muslim students at McMaster would like to extend their full support to Dr. Walker in the wake of this crime, and urge the McMaster Community to expose and eliminate any such forms of intolerance, subtle or blatant, that clearly exists amongst faculty and students, so as to work towards an environment of tolerance and learning that befits an institution as great as this.

Tomorrow there's a rally in protest of this at 2:00 pm right after Jummah in the Student Centre. It's imperative that we come together now as a community and show our support for Dr. Walker who has been affected by this, and to show our outrage and how we will not tolerate such behaviour here at McMaster. We need to stand united on this one.

In response to recent acts of Islamophobia and racism on the McMaster  University Campus, a coalition of a number of groups has formed  including students, faculty, and staff to take a stand against these acts of hate.

While reports of Islamophobia and racism have been increasing at McMaster, this coalition is motivated by a particularly offensive
incident that took place on April 10. The office door of Dr. Muriel Walker, from the Department of French, was vandalized; plastered with antagonistic remarks against Muslims that were both racist and sexist, and included the infamous Danish cartoons.

This is not the only Islamophobic incident this professor and others have experienced. We believe the April 10th incident was a response to Dr. Walker's initiative in organizing a Hijab day; an invitation to women on campus to wear a Hijab (head scarf) for a day in support of Muslim women and to create awareness of their experience as Muslims at McMaster.

The newly formed Coalition Against Islamophobia and Racism believes that the Administration at McMaster University has the responsibility to address systemic issues of discrimination and inequality in all their forms on our campus. We would like to act in solidarity with Dr. Walker and all others who have experienced similar acts of hate and discrimination on campus. To this end, we are holding a rally in the McMaster University Student Center on Friday, April 13, at 2 p.m to demonstrate our full support for Dr. Walker and to raise further awareness and understanding about Islamophobia and racism.

We are also calling for a statement on the University's current policy on hate crimes, and a full and transparent investigation of this most recent incident of Islamophobia, one which should include the entire McMaster community. It is disturbing to us that the evidence was removed immediately from Dr. Walker's door before the police were called. We have been informed that the President of McMaster, Peter George, is fully supportive of these wishes. We are appreciative of the support of the Administration and demand a long-term strategy to confront Islamophobia and hate crimes at McMaster.

McMaster MSA is an active member of this coalition and we encourage everyone to come out to the event tomorrow and show your support.

MSA Membership
MSA Updates
Written by Areej Shahbaz
Wednesday, 28 February 2007

What? The whole year has gone by but you still aren't a paid member yet? Tsk. Tsk. Don't worry, it's not too late. You still have a chance to be that paid MSA member you've always wanted.

Two reasons why everyone NEEDS to become a member:

1. Constitution Amendment: votinghappens on the board, and you can not get on the board without becoming amember. Go to www.macmsa.com/forums toadd yourself on the board. The poll to amend the constitution closes at midnight on Friday, so it is mandatory that everyone gets on the board and participates. We can not make the much needed changes in the amendment unless we get a specified significant proportion of the membership to vote for the amendment. The modified version with the old constitution is on the website and on the message board for you to look over.

2. Participation in Elections - The election process will be starting on Saturday. You can not nominate, get nominated or vote in the elections unless you are a member and have paid your fee. You must be a member by Friday if you want to participate in the e! lection process

Registration is only $5 and you can g et your membership at the following places
- Feb 27- March 2 Daily at the Dawah Booth 9am-3pm
- After Jummah Salaah! 1230 and 130 prayers. [look for the registration sign]
- Film festival  (March 2nd)

Not sure if your a paid member?
Check the list at the Dawah Booth for your name or email
