Disaster Relief for Flood Victims PDF Print E-mail
Written by Yusra Munawar

Assalamu Alaikum,

Over the past two weeks monsoon rains in Pakistan have caused floods that have washed away virtually everything locals were familiar with in the Kyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. Houses, roads, bridges, entire fields of crops, entire villages, have all disappeared under floodwaters. The UN has stated that as many as 6 million people have been affected by this disaster, which has worsened to the point of similarity to the 2005 earthquake crisis. An estimated 1,600 people have lost their lives with thousands more now lost, homeless, hungry, and vulnerable to disease. There have been outbreaks of cholera among the survivors and doctors from Save the Children report “seeing a lot of diarrhoea, fever and skin infections.” Although bad weather and blocked roads have restricted rescue operations from moving into some parts of flood-affected areas, aid workers have set up camps for the thousands of fleeing residents who are now in need of food, clean water, and medical aid. The UN Food Programme has estimated the number of temporary displaced people at 980,000- all of whom need our help. Islamic Relief is placed near Mardan and Nowshera where they have set up tents, emergency latrines and are distributing food, family hygiene kits, and other basic items.

Please Donate generously through Islamic Relief here

Penny Wars Rules PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 08 October 2007 10:17
THE GAME

Here are the rules of the game, in a lot of detail (courtesy of Hamzah Moin). Insh'Allah there will be a rule board at Iftaar to remind everyone of the rules in case there is any confusion:

First, you have two jars. One jar represents the brothers while the
other jar represents the sisters.

[] <-- sister's jar
[] <-- brother's jar

Basically people come along and put pennies in the jars. Each penny is
a point. For example, a sister has 3 pennies in her purse and wants to
get rid of them ... so she puts them in the sister's jar. A brother
comes along and has 9 pennies he wants to get rid of so he puts them in
the brother's jar. This would mean the total score right now is:

Sisters: 3 (because 3 pennies are in the jar)
Brothers: 9 (because 9 pennies are in the jar)

HOWEVER the game is filled with hilarious twists and turns. You see,
only PENNIES result in points. Anything other than pennies SUBTRACTS
from the score. So say the same sister has a nickel she wants to get
rid of ... she puts that in the BROTHERS JAR because that subtracts
points from the brothers score. And say the brother has a quarter he
wants to get rid of... he puts that in the SISTERS JAR because that
subtracts points from sisters score.

Sisters: -22 (3 original pennies - 25 cents = -22)
Brothers: 4 (9 original pennies - 5 cents = 4)

However it's not ONLY coins. Bills play a hand in this too. If someone
has a $5 then they could rack that against the score. Imagine a
fiendish sister decides to destroy the brothers score by putting a $5
bill in there. What would happen? Simple: brothers lose 500 points so
the score is now:

Sisters: -22 (3 original pennies - 25 cents)
Brothers: -496 (9 original pennies - 5 cents - 5 dollars [500 cents])

The game goes very high in the negatives because typically, when done
right, sisters and brothers get extremely competitive and start
throwing loonies, toonies, bills and whatnot. If it's in the negatives
then the team closest to zero wins. We should do it everyday at iftaar
from now until the end.

Now, couple of very important added rules:
-This year, we will have two sets of jars. Hence the brother's side will have a brother's jar and a sister's jar, and the sister's side will have a brother's jar and a sister's jar. So make sure that you throw your pennies and non-pennies into the right jar on your respective side!
-We will inshAllah refrain from any and all forms of showboating
-On the last day of Penny Wars (a.k.a. The Showdown), there shall be no extravagant displays of any sort. If you would like to do something special, you must speak with me beforehand and get my approval. This means any tweaking of the game, in any way, must be run by me first. Remember, you can contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or call me: 905-966-2713

And here's a fun incentive: The winning side will recieve a trophy that will have a plaque that will state how much was raised and it will be kept in the winning side of the msa office (i.e. if sister's win, they get to display the trophy on the sister's side and if brother's win..then they get to display it on their side).

If anyone has any questions or concerns, speak with ME.

Alright then...let the games BEGIN!

CIBC Run for the Cure PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 22 September 2007 10:57

Assalamu Alaikum,

The annual CIBC Run for the Cure is less than a week away (September
30th) and McMaster MSA’s Social Services Team would love for you to
join them for this yearly MSA tradition.

This run is for the great cause of finding a cure for breast cancer,
the most common cancer among Canadian women. On average, 429 women will
be diagnosed with breast cancer every week. In 2007, 5 300 women will
die from it. Breast cancer also occurs in MALES. In 2007, an estimated
170 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 50 will die from it.

Please join the McMaster MSA team for the Run. This year the run falls
during Ramadan, giving us a greater opportunity to attain reward and
give da’wah at the same time.

Because we will be fasting, we will WALK and not run the 1K (for
ambitious folks, there is also the option of walking the 5K). The run
will take place in Burlington from 10am to noon on SEPTEMBER 30TH
(that’s next Sunday!). Rides will be leaving from McMaster University.

Please email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you are interested, and I
will meet you to give you a donation form and collect the $35
registration fee.

Also, we will be receiving free t-shirts, and I need everyone who is
certain that they will be coming, to email me your SHIRT SIZES. Even if
I don’t have your money yet, but I have your word that you will be
attending, then the first thing you need to do is email me your shirt
size.

You can also call me at: 905-966-2713 to arrange a meeting time during
which I can collect your registration fee and give you your donation
forms.

Those of you who already have a donation form from me, I need those
returned sometime this week and I need you to pay me the registration
fee.

Please come out for this. I’m waiting to hear from all of you.

W’salaam,

Daniya Pervaiz
Director of Social Services 07/08
